help!

Okay, so those who seem to know--who is evidently NOT me:

How on EARTH do you get a 12 inch tire tube into a 12 inch tire without puncturing a hole in the tube? I have done just that twice now and, with ripped up fingers and scars growing from the efforts, am starting to doubt that I can do anything by myself...especially something that was described to me to be a very simple procedure.

Please don't say "take it to the bike shop." I really, really feel strongly about doing things and learning to do things by myself. But times like this are when I feel really humbled by all that I clearly do not know.

  1. try using a flat bladed, wooden spatula.

Dont ask me how I know..

And dip the tube in a soapy water solution before trying to cram it in.

  2. I've heard about the water trick too I think. I would ask Robert but he's asleep - maybe tomorrow if you are still stuck I could ask him ... me? I wouldn't have a clue!!!!! Sorry luv!

  3. Haven't done it myself, but Windrider sounds like he knows what he's talking about. I totally understand the desire to be able to do that sort of thing for yourself - good on you!

  4. Windy, sounds good. I'd LOVE to hear the story of how you know, of course... ;) A future blog post, perhaps??

Good idea, will give that a try...once I have feeling back in my poor fingers!

    Be well, all.

  5. perhaps in the abscence of Ron the Bike God you should take it to the shop and ask for a lesson. Then you'll know for the future. or maybe a post on freecycle- wanted: a lesson in changing bike tires!

  7. Don't inflate the tube before it goes in the tire. It's okay to put a little air in to give it shape, but don't fill it up. I took a bike maintenance class at a local bike shop - it was great!

  8. I never thought of inflating the tire just a little. I just was told to "stick it under there" with my fingers and all would be good.

Maybe I'll try again this weekend.

    Be well, all.
