our drinks

I went to dinner about a year ago with an ex-student. She had asked me for a few recommendations upon her graduation, and I had done some Spanish brush-up sessions for her for some teaching interviews she needed to prep for.

There is a local chain that serves really good quality food in the different restaurants that are located in the region. The one we chose, as my ex-student is vegetarian, is the more fish-menued restaurant. Being a Friday night in Suburbia, there was quite a wait even for two people so, after getting our names listed, going down to Black House-White Market to shop then returning to find we still had yet to be called, we opted to sit at the bar and chat.

She ordered a beer, I ordered a glass of Clos du Bois. Pinot noir, I do believe.

She looked at me, and said, "That says a lot about you."

Immediately I jumped to the defensive (of course--after all, I'm Me). "I hope that doesn't mean I'm a snob!"

"No, just that you have refined taste and that you know what you like."

Oh.

My drink choices have evolved greatly since my days of a bottle of rum in one hand and a bottle of Coke in the other, chasing the rum with the Coke in a sort of free-style Cuba Libre. I used to go for the piña coladas, the daiquiris--the fruitier the better. Kahlúa and creme was also a favorite. Beer has never been a biggee for me, but a Corona con limón could never do me wrong, and Sapporo right from the brewery in Japan rocked my world.

I like drier drinks now, preferring a margarita to the fruities anytime, and reds to whites. True Spanish sangría is a treat, but that does not really count due to the cultural plug.

So what does that say about me?

Does a certain type of beverage make a statement about its recipient?

What is your social beverage (alcoholic or otherwise) of preference? I admit to loving my water, but when out socially I do tend to drink other things besides water...so discount water here, please, as that is a basic necessity for life on Earth.

And what do you believe your choice says, if anything, about you?

Excuse me, my glass of Spanish tempranillo awaits...

  1. Well, being the solid middle class I am I drink boxed wine (usually a blush, sometimes White Zinfindel) from lead crystal glasses. I like to make the ringing sound. I also really like vanilla mud slides, frozen, fruity margaritas. Can't do whiskey and won't do beer.

Dunno what that says about me, but I don't really mind whatever it says. :)

  2. these days I tend to be a vedka and soda with a lime in it kind of guy. ( although I do love a nice dry gin martini from time to time )

I'm not too sure that what you drink necessarily says anything at all about you. But as a former bartender it can dictate what sort of tipper you are.

  3. Oh Z--being a solid middle class citizen myself my goal is to buy wine only under $10/bottle. In fact, I really like "Three-buck Chuck"...Charles Shaw at Trader Joes. Good stufff.

After a glass or two, I could give a hoot about what that says about me as well!

Hmmm, Windy--have you had a little already?! ;) I have never tried that. You do have a point with the tips. These days, when I go out we always eat and drink at the bar, so the tips are considerably higher, anyway.

But if the tender is a hottie, things might go up a bit!

Be well, both! Thanks for the insights!

  4. My drink of choice?

That's a hard one. Lately it's been a good Merlot. I aim for the most expensive I can find that is on sale for under $10.00 a bottle. Sometimes this trips me up, because I will find a really good one, then not want to spend the money on it after it's not on sale anymore.

I'm not a beer person really, but I do love a good dark or amber beer, and you nailed my favorite on the head, Corona with a Lime.

In the winter, I've become really fond of Tom and Jerry's.

So what does that say about me, I red, sweet and loaded with color?

    Loved this post Mapi,

And FYI, I love Clos Du Bois and have been to that winery!

  5. Oh, and when did "2 Buck Chuck" go up to "3 Buck Chuck"? I used to buy that stuff all the time when I lived in CA.

  6. Great choices...what is a Tom and Jerry?

    Obviously I have NEVER bartended.

Yeah--prices do rise. I don't get to TJs often, but it is a deal no matter how you cut it.

Hope you are relaxing well today, OC.
